“Having been a university student, and competing with young canoeists as part of the Great Britain Canoeing Team for over 13 years, I know mental health can have devastating consequences for students and young adults. It is so important to signpost anyone who needs help to charities and support services; I am delighted that The British Inspiration Trust (BRIT) are promoting Samaritans and Shout. It is also crucial that we know the signs of when someone may be struggling to cope, so that we can help others and make sure they do not feel isolated or alone; I am encouraged to see BRIT partnering with other charities who provide vital support to young adults and students.
BRIT are a collaborative charity who are uniting the Education, Sport and Charity sectors to support and improve the mental health and fitness of millions of students and young adults throughout the UK. It is awesome to see so many governing bodies, organisations and charities championing, promoting and endorsing their work.
The BRIT 2021 Challenge is a super opportunity to improve the mental health and fitness of students at every UK university and college. I urge every university and college to embrace the challenge, enter a team and promote the opportunity so their students can take part. Teams can be a whole university, students’ union, campus, department or even a sports team or canoeing club; the idea is to encourage as many students and staff to take part as possible.
The BRIT 2021 Challenge is enabling students and young adults to unite wherever they are (at home or on campus) and take part in a feel-good challenge to raise vital funds for charities who support young adult mental health, all while improving mental health and fitness. There are many ways to add distance to your team’s target including wheel-chair pushing, walking, jogging, running, cycling, hand-cycling, swimming, adaptive rowing, rowing or paddling.
I am delighted to be joining the BRIT Ambassador family and look forward to encouraging and supporting students at Nottingham Trent University as they take on the BRIT 2021 Challenge. I know Nottingham Trent University, Loughborough University and the University of Leicester have already entered teams and I hope they will be able to encourage the University of Nottingham, University of Northampton, University of Derby and De Montfort University to join them, so students throughout the East Midlands can participate. I also hope to encourage my fellow Olympic, Paralympic and Great Britain canoeists to join me as BRIT Ambassadors so together, we can encourage universities and colleges to enter teams and take on the BRIT 2021 Challenge”.
